UCD Champions – Changing Futures

UCD graduates have been coming together to get behind an amazing initiative that is changing more and more lives for the better each year. It’s called UCD Champions – Changing Futures and is designed to help students like Conor by providing scholarships to help pay for essentials such as food, transport, books and course equipment.

The UCD Champions campaign was inspired by graduate feedback. Without the support of our alumni, many of these students would not have had the chance to follow in their footsteps and attend UCD. UCD values the principles of equality and fairness and we believe that ability alone and not ability to pay should determine a student’s future.

Despite the initial success of this campaign, two in every three scholarship applicants were turned down last year due to lack of funds. There is an urgent need to secure €150,000 by July 31st to fund 100 new scholarships and ensure we stay on track to at least maintain our current number of scholars. UCD Scholarships benefit talented and deserving students like Conor below.

“As the eldest of four children, I’ve always felt a responsibility towards my sisters.

My mother was hit by a speeding driver when I was 16 and broke her back, which meant I spent a lot of my spare time either helping out at home or working part-time to help pay my way.

My father suffered a stroke while I was preparing to do my Leaving Cert and now has difficulty walking, so he can no longer work. Financially it’s been a huge struggle for all of us and I thought my dream of being an engineer would have to end, but my parents insisted I carry on.

I’m so proud that I managed to get 580 points, enough for a place in UCD.
Receiving the scholarship makes a massive difference with transport costs and means that I can work fewer hours, so that I have a little more time to go home to my family in Monaghan and to study.

I’m in a position where every single extra euro counts for so much.
Words can’t describe how grateful I am to the people whose donations supported me. I really don’t think I would have been able to manage without you.”

Will you join with your classmates and become a UCD Champion and help transform a deserving student’s life?
Together we can achieve great things; we can shape the future of tomorrow’s UCD

“Coming from a disadvantaged area, there was never much of a great deal of importance placed on education as not many people would go on to finish second level education or progress to third level. But receiving this scholarship has driven me, even more so than I was, to embrace the positivity of education in my life”

“This scholarship has given me a new sense of pride and confidence in myself as it was not just awarded based on need but also partially awarded on who we are as people: our achievements in life, and how we have given back to those who have helped us.”

“I feel so much more confident in myself. I am being given the exact same opportunity as anyone else. I can relax and focus on my studies. I am confident that I can go on and pursue a career and hopefully donate back to these scholarships in the future. Without this scholarship I would have dropped out”
