Phumzile's Story

During my first year, the transition was a bit difficult, but I’ve learned a lot from previous years. By the end of my first semester, I had adapted. The updated programs, including the workloads and assessments, have made it better and more comfortable.

The scholarship has significantly impacted both my personal and academic life in several positive ways. As a student, it has allowed me to focus more on my studies, increasing my chances of excelling academically. The financial burden of education costs, transportation, and family expenses has been lifted. As a refugee, this scholarship has been incredibly helpful. Before receiving the scholarship, I had concerns about fully participating in college due to a lack of learning materials, particularly a functional computer. The old computer I had lacked features for good speed. Additionally, my personal health and well-being were potential obstacles that could negatively impact my participation in the demanding university life. Lastly, there was a lack of resources at home to support learning, such as books, internet access, and fees. Relocating to another county presented a significant challenge. However, attending classes twice a week in person and completing the rest online has made it more manageable.

While studying, I encountered several challenges. Firstly, living in an emergency hostel posed difficulties. Additionally, finding a quiet place within the hostel was a struggle. Moreover, residing near Dublin’s busiest street meant I often slept only a few hours due to the noisy surroundings, which significantly impacted my health. Furthermore, being a single mother with a 10-year-old son who faced bullying at school added to my stress. Lastly, the inability to cook proper meals and relying on takeaways. The scholarship funds were allocated to specific needs. I used them to pay for storage where I kept my belongings. Additionally, the scholarship covered my child’s aftercare and tuition expenses.

During my studies, I actively participated in extra-curricular activities. I attended mature society meetings in person and engaged with the African society. Occasionally, I also joined mindfulness sessions online.

Without the scholarship, my college experience would have been incredibly challenging. Balancing numerous responsibilities both here and back home would have been overwhelming. However, community support and charitable assistance, including food vouchers, helped me during resource shortages.

The scholarship has provided me with hope and the means to survive. It significantly alleviated the heavy burden on my shoulders. Thanks to the scholarship I’ve been able to comfortably pay for my son’s aftercare for the past few months. I encourage alumni to continue supporting scholarships. Their contributions foster an environment that encourages both academic achievements and personal development among students.

I am planning to hunt for a job where I can achieve all my dreams. Specifically, I would like to work in government jobs or in a nearby organization where my skills and knowledge will be challenged daily in a corporate environment.”
