Established in August 2025 as a cornerstone project of UCD Foundation, the Humanitarian Fund was created as a direct response to the displacement of students and scholars in Gaza.

To date, the fund has successfully supported the evacuation of 21 students, covering their tuition, accommodation, and essential living expenses as they continue their education in safety at UCD. There are plans in place for six more students to be evacuated from Gaza this summer.

For these students, a period of unimaginable hardship has been transformed into an opportunity for academic advancement and personal growth. In the face of uncertainty surrounding the safety of their families in Gaza, they are determined to build a better future and are continuing their education with extraordinary resilience and courage.

Their experiences speak not only to the impact of financial support and mentorship but also to the confidence and dignity that comes from being seen, supported, and believed in.

The inaugural year of the Humanitarian Fund marks the beginning of a legacy that is shaped by the kindness and generosity of UCD alumni and philanthropic supporters.

Your support provides sanctuary and opportunity for displaced students in an institution that recognises their identity and encourages them to succeed during their studies and beyond.

Facing death every moment wasn’t easy at all. But it also showed me how vulnerable life is and how it can be taken away in just one second. My family encouraged me to go and not look back. They told me the future held good things for me.

UCD’s support, resources and community helped us a lot and gave us the confidence to continue. It’s not only about the money or the degree. This opportunity is a life-changing turning point for all of us. It is a life-opening path; a chance for another life.

I am grateful to be here. I am grateful for every single person that made this possible. One day I will tell my children that I had the chance to live this life because of them.”

Headshot of male student“I had been studying computer science before the war started. The war destroyed my university and my house, and I had to flee to Egypt in January 2024. I stayed there for almost 2 years before I arrived in Ireland in November 2025.

My UCD experience has been incredible in all aspects, from educational to friendship experiences. I live on campus, which is very convenient. There are lots of facilities and social spaces here, where I’ve made lots of friends. I’ve joined some UCD societies and take part in extracurricular activities such as volunteering at the Dalkey Book Festival. I joined the ‘Egypt at Home” event organised by the School of Business to talk to some of the students about Egypt. They were supposed to go on an educational trip there but it was postponed due to the ongoing situation.

As a result of my scholarship, I have been able to chase my dreams again after a 2-year gap. It has undoubtedly provided me with better life conditions. My postgraduate and occupational dream includes working for one of the big companies with headquarters in Dublin such as Microsoft or Deloitte.

I would like to thank UCD Foundation for their genuine support for students to continue their education without financial pressure. I would also like to thank the donors. You are not only giving money, but you also give hope to students who are struggling. Every student is focused on their future and wants to leave a positive impact in this life.”
